What happened?
A core network switch that provides access to the internet experienced an issue.
Who was affected?
Users in the following departments and locations were affected by this outage:

  • Housing and Food Services
  • Industrial Design Studio
  • Students' Union
  • Cross Cancer Institute
  • Parking Services
  • Supply Management Services
  • Physical Education
  • Alberta Cancer Board Research
  • Phillips Building
  • Lister Residences
  • Creative Services
  • Aramark

University Wireless Service (UWS) users were affected at the following locations:

  • Lister Center
  • Phillips Building
  • Physical Education
  • Research Transition Facility (RTF)
  • Heating Plant
  • Supply Management Service (SMS)
  • Industrial Design Studio (IDS)


What was impact?
The affected users were not able to access the internet.

What was the timeline of the incident?
Start: 2013/09/02 10:06 - Monitoring systems discovered a problem with a core network switch in Lister.
2013/09/02 10:06 - Lister network switch reloaded between 10:06 and 10:10.  Client connections to Lister would have had no network connectivity briefly.
2013/09/02 10:10 - Client connections were restored.
2013/09/02 10:30 - IT support analysts began working on the issue.
End: 2013/09/02 12:45 - Lister switch redundant services were restored.
