OUTAGE RESOLUTION: Network Outages on North Campus– 2013/07/12

What happened?
A distribution router that provides Internet connectivity and access to shared network services in four buildings on North Campus experienced an issue.

Users in multiple departments on North Campus were affected by this outage:

Convocation Hall:
Text Analysis Portal for Research (TAPoR)

Cameron Library
Provincial Library
Technology Training Centre (TTC)

South Academic Building (SAB)
Civil Electric Engineering
Decant Space

Central Academic Building (CAB)
Earth & Atmospheric Sciences

What was the impact?
The affected users were not able to access the internet and may not have been able to access shared network services (i.e. network printers, shared network drives.)

What was timeline of the incident?
Start: 2013/07/12 07:40 – A user reported a problem with network connectivity.
2013/07/12 07:55 – IT support analysts began investigating and working on the issue. A problem was discovered with a distribution router.
2013/07/12 09:15 – Network analysts replaced a router, then began contacting users to verify that service had been restored.
End: 2013/07/12 09:40 – It was verified with all parties that service had been restored.
